 EXCERPT 2

Oftentimes, Sae's memories blended together. The edges would blur, morphing days with nights. The settings would change, from misty caves to ruined structures. It was not as though there was too much to remember, but rather a lot she wished to forget. And so, the past was a foggy place for her. Through all that fog, Iris was solid. Although the rest was a haze, Iris' face remained stark in Sae's mind. Even when her own reflection became disfigured and confusing, she could count on the familiarity of Iris': of those pale brown eyes with slim white pupils, of her sturdy expression. The wrinkles on her face never lessened her striking smiles, or even her scowls. It was true that Sae's memory up until now was as stable as shifting clouds, but Iris was the midday sky.

Now all was dark.
